Panerai Luminor 31 Giorni: a month on one wind

Give the crown of Panerai’s new Luminor 31 Giorni 128 turns and it runs for thirty-one days. Then the movement stops on purpose, with power still stored.

Four barrels, 3.3 metres of spring

The P.2031/S is a hand-wound skeleton calibre of 276 components. Four barrels sit in series, holding a combined 3.3 metres of mainsprings. Panerai says the barrels operate at low torque and rotate quickly, minimising friction and stress on the pivots.

By the brand’s account this took the Laboratorio di Idee, the experimental arm of its Neuchâtel manufacture, seven years. Winding is done through the crown, without a separate tool.

The 31-day operating window

Panerai gives the calibre a potential reserve of about 36 days, but selects a 31-day operating window. The Torque Limiter cuts both the top and bottom of the torque delivered by the barrels. Panerai says operating within this middle section of the torque curve improves chronometry and keeps the rate consistent.

On day 31, the movement stops automatically. The brand says the halt protects the mechanism and preserves its long-term performance.

The indication on the dial therefore shows the selected operating window, not the point at which every last trace of stored energy is exhausted.

The rest of the dial furniture serves the same instrument logic. A patented jumping hour hand moves the hours without touching minutes or seconds, so setting the time after a trip does not disturb the running. The date lives on a patented polarised disc, invisible except through its window at 3.

Eight days, ten, thirty-one

Panerai presents the 31-day calibre as the latest step in a much older pursuit:

• GPF 2/56, mid-1950s: the Angelus SF 240, a movement originally conceived for alarm clocks and adapted for wristwatch use, brought roughly 200 hours, eight days, to military divers who could not afford daily winding.
• P.2002, 2005: the first Neuchâtel in-house calibre kept the eight days through a patented three-spring barrel design.
• P.2003, 2007: the first in-house automatic stretched it to ten.

The P.2031/S more than triples that.

Goldtech around the movement

• Case: 44 mm of Goldtech, Panerai’s red-hued alloy of gold and copper with platinum and silver in the mix.
• Water resistance: 10 bar. Panerai says the watch is pressure-tested 25 percent beyond that rating.
• Straps: black alligator and rubber, interchangeable without tools.

The release does not name the irony, so we will: a movement descended from military necessity now ships in red gold, two hundred pieces, boutiques only, in a cherry-blue wooden box.
