Who we are
The Crown Journal is an online watch journal at thecrownjournal.com. We are responsible for the personal data described on this page. For questions about your data, write to editor@thecrownjournal.com.
What we collect
You do not need an account to read the journal. There are no comments, forms or newsletter subscriptions on the site.
When you open a page, our hosting provider, Microsoft Azure, processes information such as your IP address and the page you request so that it can deliver the page to your browser.
If you email us, we keep your message and our reply so that we can answer you and follow up.
Cookies
We use Google Analytics to understand how people find the journal and which stories they read. It uses cookies saved in your browser under thecrownjournal.com. You can read the journal without accepting these cookies.
When analytics is running, Google receives information about
- the pages you open in the journal
- the page you arrived from
- your browser and device
- your approximate location, including city and country, worked out from your IP address
These reports do not tell us your name, and we do not use them to try to identify you. We do not sell this reading data or use it for advertising.
See Your choices for when analytics starts and how to stop it.
Google states that it does not log or store IP addresses for visitors in the EU, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
We have turned off Google signals, the feature that links visits to Google accounts. We have also turned off the optional account settings that share analytics data with Google for its own products, services and support. Google still processes the data to provide and maintain its analytics service.
The two cookies used on this site are listed below.
| Cookie | What it does | Google's default lifetime |
|---|---|---|
_ga | Distinguishes visits from different browsers | 2 years |
_ga_179QJW8DY4 | Keeps track of a visit | 2 years |
Your browser may keep them for less time. You can also delete them yourself at any time.
Google Analytics is set to retain data about individual visitors and their activity for 14 months. When you return, the retention period for your visitor record starts again. The 14-month limit does not apply to combined figures in standard reports, such as total page views.
Your choices
If the site asks first, Google Analytics loads only if you choose Accept. Nothing is sent to Google Analytics before that choice. Reject keeps analytics off.
If the site does not ask first, measurement starts when the page opens, unless a saved refusal prevents it. Advertising is switched off in both cases.
To change your choice, open Cookie settings at the bottom of any page. Choosing Reject stops further collection and removes the two cookies listed above. If analytics has not started, it stays off. This does not withdraw data already sent to Google, which remains subject to the retention settings described above. Activity recorded just before you reject may still be sent to Google shortly afterwards.
Your choice is normally remembered in this browser. If it cannot be saved, the notice tells you. A refusal then stops analytics only on the page you are reading. An earlier acceptance may still take effect on another page, so you may need to reject cookies there too. You can choose Accept again if you change your mind.
The site uses your browser's time zone and language settings to decide whether to ask first. It is designed to ask first for settings associated with the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. A missing or unrecognised time zone also means we ask first. This check happens on your device without sending a request to look up your location. These settings do not establish where you actually are.
The share buttons under each article are links. Nothing is sent to Facebook, X or WhatsApp unless you click one. If you do, that service's own privacy terms apply.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to correct it or to delete it, and you can object to its use. Write to editor@thecrownjournal.com. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority.
Changes
If we change what we collect, we will update this page and its date.
