Sixty baguettes cut to fit the Masterlink's crooked bezel

The Masterlink’s case has a straight top and a curved bottom. That is the inheritance from the Maestro, the shape Gérald Charles Genta drew for the maison that carries his name, with the “smile” cut into the lower edge at six o’clock. According to the maison, every stone is cut for its place.

The Gem-Set is that bezel done in white gold with sixty baguettes. There are three versions, in blue sapphire, red sapphire or green tsavorite. Ten pieces of each. Case and bracelet are steel.

Shorter stones at the corners

Looked at from the side, the white-gold bezel with its baguettes stands above the polished steel case. The steel beneath it carries the asymmetric outline.

The stones run straight along the top edge at twelve, turn the cut corners and then follow the curve of the smile at the bottom. In the photographs the corner stones are visibly shorter than those on the straight runs. This is where the custom cutting becomes visible.

In the frames the tsavorites read as the most saturated of the three stones, the blue baguettes the least, and the red sits between them. This is an observation from the photographs, not a gemmological claim.

Dial, bracelet and movement

• Dial: a silver, double-layered construction, with a vertical sunburst base, applied stripes and skeletonised baton hands.
• Indexes: thirteen stones in the same colour as the bezel.
• Bracelet: steel, with brushed centre links and polished outer links.
• Clasp: a concealed butterfly clasp, released by push-buttons in the last links.

Gerald Charles describes fitting a screw-down crown into a case this thin as a particular problem. Through the open caseback, the GCA1000’s bridges carry vertical Côtes de Genève that continue the dial’s stripes.

From the Sarawak to the Masterlink

Gerald Charles places the Masterlink in the line of the Sarawak, a single piece Genta designed in 2007 for the royal family of Sarawak. Its pavé case and bracelet combined diamonds with baguette rubies. The maison describes the Gem-Set as the first gem-set Masterlink, carrying forward the asymmetric integrated bracelet and the gem-setting.
